PED 3150 LL 2022/23: edition one

: Ureleite meteorite cross-section as seen by CSIRO's electron probe microanalyser (EPMA). Different materials are given different colours, with a large section of lonsdaleite in yellow in the middle left. At middle right is a small section of diamond in pink, Iron, in red, surrounds both. Magnesium in green and silicon in blue can be seen on the outside edges.

From a Chris Hadfield post: Strange diamonds from an ancient dwarf planet in our solar system could lead to the production of ultra-hard machine parts, according to scientists. A team of researchers, including those from Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has confirmed the existence of lonsdaleite in ureilite meteorites from the dwarf planet’s mantle. Lonsdaleite is a rare, hexagonal-shaped diamond believed to be much stronger and harder than its more typical cubic cousin.

WELCOME TO THE BLOG

Every two weeks, I will be creating and distributing a short blog that summarizes and reminds LL’ers of what.is happening and coming up, suggests some education-related resources, and provides selected information about the community. And, there will always be something silly at the end. Blogging is something you are asked to do as an education student. It might also be something you want to do when you are teaching, depending on the context and clientele. The blog will complement the information provided in my e-mails to you. BrightSpace is your go-to for academics.

Please subscribe to the blog. If you have anything you would like to share on the blog, let me know.

   WHAT’S UP?

  • thanks for your personal intros and for responding to each other. This really builds community
  • Tuesday, Sept. 20 – you will be with Andre Potvin and the L cohort section

ENTERING the SECOND CHAPTER OF YOUR EDUCATOR JOURNEY

Road, Travel, Banner, Header, Journey, Outdoor

CONGRATULATIONS! Most of you have now completed your second-year practicum and others will be done by June. You are now entering part two of the Great Developing Educator Journey. We are so admiring of how you have persevered through many difficult months of online learning and teaching, and how you have rallied and performed so well in your practicum placements. It has been a complete delight to read the incoming final reports that speak of such great work, effort, natural talent and developing skills. We hope you will take some time – at some point – to reflect on your journey so far. You are now firmly pointed toward your career in education

THIS WEEK:

  1. There will be no 3151 H/HH online class at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, February 3rd. We will be at a funeral celebrating the life of Paul’s mother, Barbara McGuire, a wonderful spirited and talented woman. We will prepare an asynchronous activity, posted on Brightspace in the H/HH section, that allows you to reflect and represent your practicum experience, and we will be e-mailing you with a time for an open drop-in session in the week of February 7th. Thank you for your understanding. We will ‘see’ you on February 17th online, and will be looking at your work for the 3rd.
  2. All final reports should have been submitted to the practicum office and to us by you by January 28th unless other arrangements were made.
  3. Check out the winter semester format and schedule as posted on Brightspace. if you need a room on campus on Thursdays during 3151 time, they are posted there. Some of the schedule message is below.

  5. Check Brightspace for updated information on OCT temporary certification and overall accreditation. You are responsible for ensuring you have submitted all of the requisite information for registration with the college.
  6. The National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec Coty Mosque Attack was on January 29th – information below.
  7. International Holocaust Remembrance Day was on January 27th, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945.
  8. Check your e-mail for messages from us regarding the online, open hour (TBD) and any notices about work outstanding.
  9. TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF YOURSELVES. HAVE SOME FUN THIS COMING WEEK.

The week of October 11th, 2021 – Thanksgiving

Leah Dorion

Hello Everyone – hope you are having a good week and enjoying some of the sunny, autumn weather – even if it is a practicum day.

We wish you all a very good Thanksgiving weekend – a time to reflect on what we can be grateful for and to collect energy for the rest of the fall term. As we said on Thursday, we do apologize for there not being adequate time for small group discussions of the Kendi book and discussion questions. There will be more time available in our next class together on October 14th, based on chapters 6-9 in Kendi. Please take time to read each others’ responses on the UCC Book Club discussion boards as they will enrich your understanding of racism and anti-racism. UCC Book Club: Discussion Board 3 responses are posted and are due October 12th for class discussion on October 14th: https://uottawa.brightspace.com/d2l/le/241277/discussions/topics/295804/View

We hope some of you had the opportunity on September 30th to learn more about reconciliation. We will continue to offer ideas for inquiry and education.

Tomorrow, you have a mandatory PLC given by the Ontario College of Teachers. There will be lots of information imparted and many good questions and discussions.

Here – in italics – is the excerpt from Tracy Crowe’s section on Brightspace highlighting 3151 general “to do’s” for this week and next.

Mid-week post for you all

What Adaptive Teaching strategies you have seen as a student, are seeing as a developing educator and have or will use in your own teaching.

ideas from you?    (pretty quiet so far😁)

Because we know you wanted to know!!

FORMAL AND IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS: ACCOMMODATIONS, MODIFICATIONS, MODIFIED used in IEPs and in Teaching

ACCOMMODATIONS: refers to special teaching, assessment strategies, human support and/or specialized equipment required to enable a student to learn and to demonstrate what they have learned. Accommodations do not alter the provincial curriculum expectations for that grade. Many students only have accommodations on their IEP. Accommodations can be changed and should be changed according to the assessed development of the student and changing needs.

Examples:

Instructional: buddy/peer tutoring; duplicated notes; graphic organizers; assistive technology such as speech-to-text or text-to-speech, extra time

Environmental: strategic seating; headphones; alternate, quiet setting; reduction of audio/visual stimuli

Assessment: extended time; verbatim scribing; oral responses; prompts to return attention; extra time; reduced tasks to show understanding

MODIFICATIONS: are changes made in the age-appropriate grade-level expectations for a subject or course in order to meet a student’s learning needs. These changes may involve developing and following expectations that reflect knowledge/skills of a different-grade level, curriculum expectations, and/or increasing or decreasing the number/complexity of the regular grade-level curriculum expectations. Often, students will have modifications in one subject area and not in another. Generally, language and math modifications are geared toward a different level as these subjects are based on a spiral curriculum and are taught every year. Other subjects like social studies typically involve modifications that change the number or the complexity of the curriculum, grade-level expectations.

Dear Educators,

Welcome to the event page for the second webinar in our new 2021 webinar series: Embracing the Shift: Sharing Our Pandemic Stories of Connecting to Land and Children’s Natural Curiosity! In 2020, we brought you Natural Curiosity in the New Normal, a four-part conversation about getting outside and staying outside amid COVID-19. We highlighted an Indigenous lens on the current crisis in education and invited educators to slow down and embrace the natural world as co-teacher. In our continuing series, we hope to build on these foundational ideas, with more educator stories to further unpack the principles and practices laid out in Natural Curiosity 2nd Edition.

The week of November 1st, 2020

WELCOME TO NOVEMBER

Uncertainty – irritation or opportunity or both?

As you now know, all November Wednesday CSL days are not happening. COVID uncertainty and a labour dispute at the University of Ottawa threw a wrench into first-year student placements. Well, the labour dispute has ended and the hard-working admin. staff are back at it – working with colleagues – to arrange and confirm practica for all first-year teacher candidates,.

TECH TIP of the week for teaching and learning

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

As we understand, U of O Faculty of Education students will have access to Google Classroom. Google Classroom is used by many teachers in the five Ottawa boards, and is a simple and effective LMS (learning management system). Given the current, uncertain situation with COVID-19, it is a VERY good idea to start getting your Google Classroom understanding and skills going. You may very well be teaching on-line with your Associate and want to be comfortable and adept.

You can start practising now. USE/CREATE a Google account. Do not use your uottawa e-mail as the account. You want to make this a practice account and not get Google “confused” about two accounts. You can load GC on your phone and laptop. It is free. It will ask you if you are with a school or university. For practice purposes, you are not; go on as an individual with a separate g-mail account. When the university activates its Google Classroom suite, then you use your uo address/account. Just go to: Google Classroom.

Want some tutorials? Here is one site: https://alicekeeler.com/google-classroom/

What is your favourite TV show?

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I love people and want to inspire young people to care about science and math. And I think I have a natural ability to connect with people and help them understand issues/topics better in an engaging and positive way.

I want children to love learning. As well I want to inspire children to be brave, curious and follow their passions.

Many reasons, the main one is I want to make a difference in someones life.

Question: OK, I need to know – what do you think about having a private Facebook Group for 3150 sections H/HH?? – so, I think we will give this a pass

How do usually communicate with students/peers? What communication tools work best for you? https://wordart.com/create

Follow-up Post – Your Questions Answered!!

Hi Everyone

We won’t always be doing this, but given the number of great questions, we thought we would write an additional blog to answer and in some cases, illustrate our answers. We will copy the question and then provide an answer. We have also added some of your comments from today’s session.

here we go, responses where possible in green

visual shared with class:

My mic has been giving me some problems but one thing that stuck out in my mind was the idea of bettering ourselves as opposed to the usual approach that we will be bettering the students. I thought it was important that Geordie highlighted the negative impact of the education system and the way students are spoken to. My brother experienced this first hand as he was told not to go to university

If we students wanted to continue an informal discussion, the Discord server is a great platform, and I can help anyone who needs it through navigating it

I feel like some people are unfamiliar with platforms like discord, but maybe a small trial can be done these first couple weeks and more people can join if it is a success

How about a different platform where we can easily access and do discussions more freely? Discord/ Facebook group?

We will let you set that up unless you want us to do this for the class. Right now we have the watercooler discussion group and Teams – happy to do this if that is what people want, but still not sure how people want to do.

What is the purpose of the book club?

The book club was assigned as content by Tracy – all 3150 students are doing this at some point. We started ours earlier

Where do we post the response to the Daniel article?

We have added in everything you need to do in the checklist for the week – it is also included with this blog

also, we post everything in the checklist to the calendar here

is there a difference between learning log and reading log

Our mistake – they should all be called learning logs

do we post the response to two articles ( Professional Learning Communities, Collaborative Teacher Inquiry), article in the same place as the Daniel response? or is the chambers article due there?

There is a Learning Log area for each response that you need to do and we try to put links into your particular Learning Log like this:

Will there be an assignment or reading logs linked to the DiAngelo book at some point?

other teachers in UCC are working on this

My understanding was that 31501 is the fall portion of the course, and 31502 is the winter section.  I’m a bit confused because I am told that the current course material can be found in 31502 on brightspace and not 31501.  I’m just wondering why that is.

Yes, this is confusing, but we can’t do much about this.

this is our course – UCC

this is the Brightspace course for the rest of 3150 – don’t go there

having both courses available and being updated is extremely confusing

yes, we know

Would it be possible to post the answers to questions on Brightspace or somewhere that we can all see them? I think a lot of us have struggled with confusion about which courses to look at in Brightspace

yes, that is why we are doing this

so just ignore the PED31501?

yes please
