Quotations from one of our readings for this week – Achieving Excellence: Weaving together
Student Achievement, Equity, and Well-Being
In Conversation with Kahontakwas Diane Longboat, Nouman Ashraf, and Carl James

the critical piece for educators is this: know that
when that child walks into the classroom you are
dealing with a human being who has an incredible
wealth of family life history. It is experience that
originates in their cultures, their languages, their
faith traditions, their families, and their communities.
I call it cultural capital.

Conversation with Kahontakwas Diane Longboat

To me, diversity is a fact of the human experience.
The question is not, “What do we think about
diversity?” The question is, “What are we doing
with it? Are we simply tolerating it?” If that’s the
case, we are certainly setting the bar far too low.
“Are we engaging it in a way that actually allows
for people to feel valued? Are we leveraging it,
so we actually find ways in which we would learn
from each other and about each other and through
each other?”

Conversation with Nouman Ashraf

In the classroom, as I always say, you need to know the student who is sitting in front of you. What I mean by this is knowing students, not as we imagine them to be because of the construct we have from the media or from things we’ve read or observed, or who they truly are. This involves making the effort to truly understand students – through observation, through conversations, through learning about their experiences and identities, and by understanding their perspectives. It also means recognizing that students come to us from parents and caregivers, from a community, from significant others who have influenced their ideas. When we interact with students, we interact with all these things. Of course, we will get to know students through their work, their assignments and so on, but we will only understand our students fully by committing to getting to know them as unique individuals.

The week of October 19th, 2020

HEADING TOWARD READING WEEK!!! WOO HOO! (or woo hoo, in 2020 language)

We hope you enjoyed the 2020 version of Thanksgiving, and last Tuesday’s PLC with the presentation by the Ontario College of Teachers and the Principals’ Panel featuring Carson Grove principal,  Jeremy Nowiski and St. FX principal, Sean Kelly.

Weekly practicum placements are scheduled to begin on November 4th, the Wednesday after READING WEEK. Given the current situation, we are still waiting for confirmation of placements. But, we are all getting ready with letters of introduction and reading and understanding the Practicum Guide, right?

We are still waiting for your terrific KAHOOT questions for the great H/HH 3150 KAHOOT GAME on November 3rd. One multiple-choice question, 4 possible answers with one correct one for us to know. DUE: October 22nd. This is just for fun and KAHOOT is a great tool for kids. Categories: readings; popular culture (music, films, TV, literature, celebrities); sports; politics

Keep persevering through these challenging times. If ever you have questions or would like to have an on-line meeting, we are here for you as your faculty advisors.
